Some of our dogs enjoyed walking and playing in the snow last week. Sparkle (top) has been with BARK for over 4 years now, and we would love to see her in a forever home this year. She would prefer to be the only dog in the home, because she likes to have her people all to herself.

Humpty (left middle) is a young hound mix who is super friendly. He’s fairly active, and loves to play and go for long walks.

Alex (right middle) is a sweet shepherd mix who is always SO happy to see people, that her entire body starts wiggling uncontrollably. She was previously in a home with a family and kids, and she would really love to be back in a home soon.

Roxie (bottom) is a 10 year old Rottweiler mix who would like a soft place to settle for her golden years. This sweet old gal has a wonderful personality and gentle demeanor, but is often overlooked due to her age.

This beautiful dog is Fango, who was brought to BARK over two years ago when his owners moved away. Fango is very friendly and easy-going, and he walks very nicely on a leash. He will try to chase cats, so he shouldn’t be in a home with them, but otherwise, he would make an amazing new family member!

Does your shelter software system force you to guess at breed labels? Shepherd Mix, Lab Mix, Pit Mix, Chow Mix, etc.: what do those labels really tell us about the dogs and are they distracting adopters from getting to know the dogs as individuals first?

At Animal Farm Foundation, we regularly hear from shelter workers who would prefer to describe their dogs as individuals, some of which are breed unknown, but the system won’t allow it. We can’t force software companies to reprogram their systems, but we do have a tool to help you! Our posters are designed to start conversations with your adopters about the importance of looking at an individual dog’s personality and needs, rather than relying only a breed label (or a guess) to give them accurate information.

Print this poster and hang it up in your shelter or print out the smaller cards and hang them on the kennels (hint: laminate them so they’re easy to reuse!). You can print this right from our website, in color or black and white, on any 8.5x11 paper. And don’t stop there: We post the same statement on all of our petfinder.com listings and you can too. Encourage your adopters not to get distracted by labels and to focus on getting to know the individual dogs instead!

This big beautiful boy is Huey. He’s just under 3 years old and is a purebred German Shepherd. He came to BARK after his owner passed away. Huey is well socialized, good on a leash, and he even knows some basic obedience commands, like sit, shake, etc. He is very sweet, and super friendly, and would make a smart, loyal companion. Recent prison “graduates” Betty and Emmett are now fully trained and ready to go into their forever homes!
